The story didn’t end at Hatcher’s Run… it was leading toward a final, desperate fight that would help seal the fate of the Confederacy.  Just days before General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, the Battle of Sailor’s Creek became one of the most devastating defeats for the Confederate Army. Thousands of soldiers were killed, wounded, or captured as Lee’s retreat turned into a desperate struggle for survival.  In this follow-up to my visit to Hatcher’s Run Battlefield, I travel deeper into Virginia’s Civil War history to explore the events surrounding Sailor’s Creek—a battlefield where an army was shattered and the end of the war drew painfully close.  Today, the landscape is far removed from the chaos of April 6, 1865. Yet beneath the quiet countryside lies a story of sacrifice, desperation, and a nation approaching the end of one of its darkest chapters.  What did this ground witness? Come along to explore Hatcher’s Run Battlefield in Virginia, a historic location where the American Civil War left its mark on the landscape. Today, birdsong, rustling leaves, and peaceful woodland have replaced the sounds of battle—but beneath the forest’s growth lies a history that helped shape the final chapter of the war.  In February 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant continued tightening his grip around Petersburg as Confederate General Robert E. Lee struggled to hold his exhausted army together. The fighting around Hatcher’s Run became part of the Union campaign to stretch Confederate defenses and cut vital supply routes leading into Petersburg.  Walking through this area today, I found myself reflecting on what these woods might have looked like more than 160 years ago.
